Trapped In Food Addiction!
Being trapped in your skin is a prison-like no other. You can’t wish yourself thin. Willpower is a joke! What no one realizes is your body is helpless against food cravings. They control your life. Somewhere along the way you either lost your power over food or like me, you never had it in the first place.
If your journey has been anything like mine, then you know wanting to lose weight and trying different diets as a food addict, is a waste of time, money, and unnecessary suffering. Your mind whispers, “There is no hope! Let’s just eat deep-fried everything and be happy for however long it lasts.”
Why does food wield so much power over so many?
Food is life-sustaining. It is normal to want to satisfy our hunger with food. Food tastes delicious, meets our basic needs, triggers a pleasure response, and nourishes our bodies. Food is a tool to keep us alive. But somewhere along the way food became less about sustaining our bodies and more about eating to induce a pleasurable high as many times as we can in 24 hours.
I believe food addiction is a tool Satan uses to cripple our lives and make us less effective for the kingdom of God. Yes, his weapon of choice for us is food. John 10:10 pulls the blinders off by reminding us that, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”( ESV)
Here’s how you can tell if you are stuck in a Satanic food trap. Use the litmus test of scripture to answer the following questions honestly.
Is your abuse of food stealing from you? Is it consuming your finances, and stealing experiences away from you? (Yes, the experience of walking up a flight of stairs certainly counts.)
Is food addiction killing you faster with obesity-related diseases? Have you heard the words you need to lose weight to manage your blood pressure, triglycerides, and insulin?
Hear me when I say food addiction has one job. It will most likely destroy you and your life span. When your life ends, so does the work you were called to do for the kingdom of God. If God has a plan for you to lead someone to Christ in your 85th year of life, will you be here to do it? Maybe grandchildren need your example of faith to expand their Godly influence. Will you be around for them?
Comfort Food Is Killing Us!
The crazy thing is food addiction masquerades as a benign feeling of love for fried foods and/or sugary treats. It’s supposed to feel comforting and anesthetizing. Romans 7:20 reminds us that “ Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.” Sin dwells in us. It is natural to gravitate towards it. Food addiction is your homeostasis. To eat any other way would be lifesaving, but painfully outside of our comfort zone and foreign to our flesh.
Are you wondering if there is any hope at all for someone like you? Absolutely! And for the people in the very back, allow me to yell it…
“Yes! You can be free from food addiction!”
The second half of John 10 was there staring you in the face all this time. It says “… I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”( ESV).
The same Jesus that came to redeem your soul is present to set you free from the trap of out-of-control eating. The way forward is not easy. You will go through withdrawals, temptation and doubt. Pizza will greet you at every corner. And your co-workers will suddenly purchase donuts by the crate. The enemy will not let you go without waging full-scale war.
But Jesus…
Your savior came specifically for you. He wants to hear your anguished prayers when you feel like you can’t go on. He rejoices with you every time you use scripture to halt the enemy in his tracks. He will be there the 210th time you feel like caving in and eating everything in sight.
He will comfort you as you cry. And he will empower you to rise again for the next battle.
Let Jesus into your food. Ask him to be Lord over ALL of your life. Boldly ask Jesus to kick the king of hot wings off the throne of your heart.
Jesus, the Savior of Humanity, is able to save you and restore your life!
Are you willing to let him?
A Little Food For Thought
Thanksgiving and Prayer (Ephesians 1: 15-23)
15 For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love[f] toward all the saints, 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
