Get Unstuck; Face Your Failures!

I had a much needed conversation with myself on the commute home. People will often lose patience with themselves because of past failures. I am definitely one of those people. I have experienced so many repetitive failures, that parts of my life operate on muscle memory of mistakes! It’s been difficult to break the cycle. I’m accomplished in certain areas of my life. I have experienced a lot of success and victories. In those areas I feel confident and secure. But there are other areas; unmentionable areas. In those areas I hold a PhD in messing up and repetitive failures. I recognize my fears and failures and I am challenging them. It’s been a painful and embarrassing process but I want to share this journey with you. I have a knack for sharing while I’m in the muck. I do it because I personally love it when people show me the struggle, then the resolution. I love a good resolution but I value the process so much more. If I know the process, then I can do it too. So here’s what I’m doing to overcome my fear of failure and try again:
Speak Truth
I have learned to say the hard things to myself. Allow me to give you an example. It’s no secret that I have battled obesity and food addiction my whole life. This has been one of my greatest battles. I’ve been stuck in a cycle of losing and gaining weight for over thirty years. That really sucks! Here’s a harsh truth I will rarely admit: I never really wanted to work at losing weight. I love eating whatever I want no matter how good or bad it is for me. And exercise, smecershise: who wants to sweat, and feel muscle aches and pains on purpose? (This is a rhetorical question for those who struggle with an exercise regimen, and besides, no one likes a showoff 🙂 Now, here’s an even more difficult truth. I have spent half of my life trying to beat this thing. It is my single greatest failure. People have seen me fit and fabulous and they praise me. I smile, but deep down I wonder how long until I gain ALL the weight back and disappoint myself and everyone else. So what am I doing about it?
I…
- Recognize failure is a part of the process
- Ask for help
- Become accountable
- Do the thing for me (not everyone else)
- Repeat the following steps
That’s it.
Basically, I’m willing to keep trying over and over again no matter how many missteps I experience.
I refuse to feel ashamed but even if I do, I won’t let it stop me. I may never master certain things in my life. It doesn’t mean I won’t keep trying. Let’s look our failures in the face and try again and again. Some things are too important to give up on. My health is one of those areas for me. What is that area for you? How will you rebound from failure? If you have found lasting success or experienced an epiphany, share with us who are on the journey. We value your insight.
At the end of the day; you are worth another try!
Seize, unshakeable faith, wealth beyond measure and laughter ’til it hurts.
